What (I think) UP should do to win their next games :))
Two games and two losses should be enough for Coach Dandan to finally pick a consistent starting line-up for the UP Fighting Maroons. I think and what others probably also say, the problem with his team right now is that they don’t have steady starters and players coming off the bench. Coach keeps on rotating his players and almost gives each of them equal amounts of playing time. It seems he has not found dependable players in his team yet.
I go for Gamboa, Lopez, Silungan, Hipolito and Ball as starters for the Maroons. And Asilum, Montecastro, Manuel, Padilla and Mbah as reserves. Jett Manuel should be the obvious sixth man. Asilum, the promising rookie, can also be inserted early in the game.
I know that the team is in need of strong and tall inside players however Mbah and Soyud have failed to really show up and play well in the last two games. Mbah is weak in handling the ball and does not shoot as well. On the other hand, Soyud loves to shoot but seldom drops, hardly touching the rim of the basket. I get so frustrated when he does these mid-range jump shots which are often short. Dandan must have so much trust in him for him to get a lot of playing time. He must be good during practice but come game time, he’s a flop.
As for the starters, I pick Gamboa not because of his shooting neither his quickness nor passing ability. I need him there to play point guard and make good plays for the team. Lopez and Silungan play well together; either they drive or do jump shots. They must be the two prime scorers for the team, (aside from Manuel or Padilla). Hipolito, though I’m not sure if he can really play power forward, can help in the offense. Ball is tall and he has to capitalize on that. Defend and rebound.
Of course we can’t really expect consistent good performance from these five, unlike in the other teams like Ateneo or FEU, so there’s a huge need for reliable reserves. This is where the offense from the reserve guards Asilum, Montecastro and Manuel comes into play. Coming off the bench, they have to provide the spark for the team.
And during crunch time who will you go to? Not Soyud, please for God’s sake. UP has lots of choices now unlike in the previous seasons. We got shooters in Manuel, Padilla, Asilum and Silungan. See? We can really win a game. We just have to pick which players can deliver for the team.
“This instrument (TV) can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box. There is a great and perhaps decisive battle to be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference. This weapon of television could be useful.”—
