It is the easiest and fastest thing to do: to blame it all on the poor, for their stupidity, and lack of concern. For accepting bribes and making ill choices in their ballots.

(We) the schooled people, the middle class, the Filipino bourgeoisie will never realize their full potential of actually making an impact or of creating some sort of change in the society if they remain in their comfort zones. I.E. The Internet.

It is not the time to point fingers. Own it, man.

I guess it is a bit improper to say that politicians “probably” do not know or understand the situation of the Filipinos. (Or it is a bit safe to say so.) I’d like to believe that these politicians are actually well aware of the troubles that the masses go through. For one, they wouldn’t be able to promise things like “iaahon ko kayo sa kahirapan”, “libreng edukasyon at libreng pagamot”, “mababa at tapat na presyo ng bilihin”, etc. etc. if they do not know who are people they are supposedly serving in the first place. These people running in the coming elections are smarter than we thought of them. They know what the people want and what the people need. Now, it is just a matter of “will they give what the people want and need?”

I might sound a bit too fast and straight to the point. Of all things, what I do not want is to sound too simplistic or downright negative. But I hope I am making a clear point here.

The thing is this: I don’t expect politicians to actually “have a change of heart” or suddenly be pro-people and become genuine representatives just by integrating with the masses once in a while. Or by living the lifestyle of the poor for a day or a period of time. Why? Because they’ve been doing that since time immemorial! A politician won’t win in the elections without talking to his constituents. That is actually a prerequisite for being a politician. In fact, one of the major challenges faced by a politician is to identify himself or herself with the poor. That is why every election season, aside from the bright promises they bring to the voters, what they also do is convince the people that they are “ang tunay na mahirap”, “champion ng masa”, “di trapo - karaniwang tao”.

And this stuff is for real! And mind you, this is not a simple thing. Remember 2010, when Erap won over Villar in the presidential race? It appeared Erap was still the one-and-only legit “tunay na mahirap”. Sorry Manny Villar; thank you for trying. :p

What I’m trying to say is identifying with the poor or the non-elites, being able to talk to them, knowing their problems is not a big concern. I mean, it is not an issue at all! Yes we are all aware that majority of our politicians come from rich families. That’s a given. But do we stop there? Can we already justify the existence of elite political clans in our government just by believing they could or would eventually understand the plight of masses through research or integration?

Say Noynoy Aquino. Is it enough that he integrate with the HLI farmers for a day or a week or a month? Is it enough that he conduct a research and learn how much the farmers there earn per day? He needs to deny the class where he comes from. He needs to deny his family in order to finally and honestly grant the land to the farmers. Would he do that? That is the bigger question.

Mick Philpott, dubbed Shameless Mick by the British press for his jobless lifestyle which he bragged was paid for by state benefits, remained defiant to the end, giving spectators in court an obscene gesture after he was sentenced.

Philpott, his wife, Mairead, and a friend, Paul Mosley, set the fire while six of the couple’s children slept. The plan was for Philpott to rescue the children and emerge a hero. The blaze would also be blamed on Philpott’s former mistress so he could gain advantage in a bitter custody battle over five of his other children.

Ito siguro ang pinakanakakapagod na araw para sa’min ni Lester sa Tondo. At ngayon din ang araw na nakalanghap kami ng pinakamaraming volume ng usok! Tho, kahit papaano, bilang pabalik-balik na kami dun, sanayan na lang din.

Nakakapagod ang araw na ito pero na-overpower siya nung saya na dulot ng bonding time with the kids. Ang shoot para sa eksena ng isang larung-pambata ay nauwi sa totoong laro na. (Nalowbatt na kasi ko) Ayun, nakipagkulitan na lang sa mga batits.

Isa sa mga pinakagasgas ng linya ay ang “kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan”. Lalo pa ngayong panahon ng graduation. Napakasimple lang ng ideya ng katagang ito. Pero kung titingnan nating mabuti, paano nga ba at bakit nga naging pag-asa ang kabataan?

Idealism. Ang pagiging idealistic, intuitive at assertive ng kabataan ang dahilan kung bakit sila kinukonsiderang pag-asa. At sa pagtanda nila, paglabas ng eskwelahan, sa pagiging parte ng labor force ng bansa, kaakibat nito ang pag-asang madadala nila ang idealism na hinubog sa kabataan.

Subalit kung ang nais din naman pala nating lahat (gaya ng sabi ni Mareng Winnie), pagtanda ay magtino-tino, mas maging objective, at pakawalan ang idealism… e di sana di na tayo nag-aral. Naggagaguhan lang pala tayo sa loob ng school.

Do we fucking expect change kapag ganito tayo klase mag-isip? Kung ang takbo ng utak natin ay lapat lang sa status quo at dikta ng system? NO. Magpapaikot-ikot lang tayo sa mga paulit-ulit na problema kinsasadlakan ng bansa.

Ito naman exactly ang problema ng mga tibak sa mga hindi tibak. Muli, hindi necessarily para lang makapang-antagonize, kundi magbigay lang ng klarong punto, … ang tibak labas sa sarili kung tumingin ng mga bagay-bagay.

Batid naming ang suicide ay complex na phenomenon, wala naman kaming argumento taliwas doon.

Pero kung merong nagsisimplify ng diskurso, hindi kami iyon. Ang pagsisi o pagtoon ng pansin sa sistema at sitwasyon ng edukasyon sa bansa ay di pagsisimplify ng usapin. Bagkus ito ay lalong pagpapalalim. Nakikita namin ang kahalagahan ng pagpapalim ng diskurso ng mga bagay-bagay.

At tingin ko dito na tayo nagkakatalo.

Ang pagreject sa usapin ng education crisis bilang kabahagi ng nangyari kay Kristel ay ang siyang suspek.

Maaaring sa iilan o sa maraming tao, pangit tingnan na tila ba tinutungtungan o ginagamit ng mga progresibong grupo at estudyante ang pagkamatay ni Kristel para maipadaloy ang kanilang politika at “propaganda”. Pare-parehas lang tayo nakikipagluksa sa pamilya ni Kristel. Kahit pa kalakhan o karamihan sa atin ay wala nama talagang personal na koneksyon sa kanya.

Sa katotohanan, kayang-kaya naman talaga nating idismiss na lang ang isyu na parang isang tipikal na suicide case lang. Dahil marami naman talaga nagpapakamatay, di lang dito sa bansa kundi sa buong mundo. For whatever reasons.

Pero tanungin natin yung sarili natin, ano ba yung dahilan kung bakit nakikiluksa tayo, kung bakit tingin natin apektado tayo sa usapin, kung bakit compared sa ibang suicide cases tila mas may paki tayo dito?

Simple lang: UP student din kasi tayo. At may konsepto tayo na yung pinagdaanan ni Kristel ay napagdadaanan din natin o at least ay malapit sa atin.

Pero kung di natin maiintindihan ang dahilan kung bakit lapat sa isyu ng edukasyon ang trahedya ni Kristel, parang tulad na rin ito ng pagdismiss natin sa nangyari bilang isang tipikal na suicide lang. At sa kahulihan, magagawa na rin nating kalimutan ang pangyayari at magsawalang-bahala.

Inuulit ko, hinuhugot namin ang poot sa kailaliman ng aming mga puso. At di naman, sa katotohanan, ito dapat na ipinaliliwanag pa. Lubhang nakakaoffend lang kasi ang maparatangang we’re doing this just for mere propaganda. We listen, we sympathize, we discuss, and we speak to people.

At, PS, sorry kung gumagamit pala ko ng we point of view. sariling palagay ko lang ang mga ito.

And now this is where my frustration settles in. Not meant to antagonize people, but can I just express my dislike and doubt over the seemingly immense outpour of sympathy and rage online regarding the Tejada suicide case? Suddenly, people are posting images and statuses in Facebook and Twitter about STFAP, about education being a right, about the incompetence of the government, etc.

Now where are these people when we call for protest action in AS, in Mendiola or in CHED? How do we actually expect changes to happen? Yes, the overwhelming attention being given by the UP students and the media over the issue helps a lot. And, it gives me so much hope that, apparently, the Iskolar ng Bayan actually still cares about politics and national issues.

But for how long? But… how exactly? For real?

It seems that the Sabah issue is gradually dying already. Just last week, I attended a forum at the University Hotel discussing the Sabah case, and the day after that I went to cover a protest action at the Malaysian Embassy in Makati. My friend and I were sharing insights on the issue and we just basically agreed on everything – that Sabah is rightfully ours, that PNoy is insensitive and anti-people, that the Kiram’s are actually receiving meager support from the Filipinos (i.e. Catholics, people from Luzon and Visayas), etc, etc.

More importantly, we thought that the media is really going to play a big role in the success or failure of the matter. If I remember correctly, it was Princess Jacel who said in the forum that the issue was currently trending and being attended to by the media because the situation in Sabah was still hostile. But if the RSF would surrender and the Suluks would go back in Tawi-Tawi defeated, and apparently this is what’s being said in the recent news, the issue would die down.

I feel utterly upset with the situation. Yes I expected this to happen, because like what I told my friend, the move by the Sultanate was indeed wrong-timing. BUT, have we forgotten that easily? Last few weeks ago do you remember when you shared a photo or a meme, or posted a status about the Sabah claim? I thought you supported it? Where are you now? You guys even aware of the current state of the issue?

I know that it is probably too early to speak of defeat. But I bet that is where we’re heading. In the next few weeks, the government will probably do its steps to finally go after Sultanate Kiram. Will you be there to defend him and his claims?

Going back to where I started this note, I have a fear that Kristel’s case will also fade away. Yes, we’re seeing some significant and fast reactions from the UP Admin answering the issue. But then, we are aware that the tragic event does not end by simply eliminating the “forced LOA” provision, or by reviewing the STFAP. The education crisis in the Philippines has been there for so long, and UP’s problems are just a small part of it.

Could we expect you now to go out in your classrooms and join us in the mob? That will be absolutely great if you answer yes. But if you think otherwise, probably there’s another problem we have to resolve.

Also last week, news came out about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s death. I recall this particular meme which was a picture of the hundreds of thousands of people in the streets mourning for Chavez’s death. The caption said something like: He’s a dictator? That much people mourned for Hitler’s, Marcos’, Sadam’s death?

And it wasn’t the first time I scrolled into a photo like that in Facebook. Recently, mass protests all over the world, usually in the Middle East, have been arising. Photos of hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people assembled in the streets voicing out their calls.

That’s what I want to see happening here in the Philippines – people asserting their thoughts and beliefs, standing up for their calls. People not limited by the democracy the Internet can provide. People who dare veer away from the status quo. People who are informed and equipped, and understand their power as a collective entity. People who are not too disillusioned and do not think that rallying is taboo.
